Alas! Jack and Jill Went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down And broke his crown, But, alas! Jill was wearing her seat belt! Copyright © 1986 Babs Bell Hajdusiewicz[caption id="attachment_95" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Poetry Works! sets"][/caption] I penned "Alas!" some 30 years ago––it was first published in one of my three Poetry Works! kits for classroom use (Modern Curriculum Press/Pearson Education, 1990, and available on my website)––when I was into composing all sorts of poems and fun songs to help wee ones take on the habit of hooking up seat belts. And guess what! Such language works to help little ones learn to value and begin to take on some responsibility for their own safety in a vehicle––and yours as they begin to remind YOU to hook up! Okay, you've read and recited "Jack and Jill" and "Alas!" again and again. Now, we'll start to play with the language of "Alas!" to TALK about more kinds of safety...more language and knowledge of the world around us. What would Jack and Jill wear for safety if they were traveling up the hill on a tricycle, a bicycle, or a motorcycle? And what safety equipment would they wear if they were traveling in a boat? More ideas? Go ahead and TALK using all that language and knowledge! Tomorrow is Thinking Thursday when we'll expand on this Wacky Wednesday TALK about that same familiar nursery rhyme...and then some more! Happy Wacky Wednesday!
